"We arrived at 10 a.m. as advised and the light on the Podium was magical. The site is vast (19,000 m²) but we did a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must! Access via tram 9 from Isola is very simple. We took our time in the Park; Koolhaas’ architecture is truly impressive. A bit pricey at €19, but the experience is worth it."
"The 60-meter Torre is incredible. The mirrors create disorienting reflections - we lost our way for a moment! The experimental Cinema left a strong impression; it really stands out. We stopped at Atelier Brancoli for a coffee and had a perfect view of the red bricks of the former distillery. The €19 fee is justified by the sheer scale of the place. We’ll be back."
"The architecture is a spectacle in itself. The Marble Elevator is a unique sensory experience before heading up the tower. We found the exhibitions a bit dense, but the atmosphere in the Park is soothing. Note that the site is spread out - there is a lot of walking. Bus 57 provides a direct route. The reception was fine, and we strongly recommend coming in the morning."
"We were in town for a weekend and avoided the crowds by arriving at opening time. The Podium, in steel and glass, contrasts beautifully with the old industrial buildings. We loved watching the architecture from outside during our coffee break. The €19 combined ticket covers the main areas well. A one-of-a-kind place, very different from central Milan. Impressive."
"I was traveling solo and felt completely immersed. The Torre offers a panoramic view of Milan that changes with the light. The vibe at Atelier Brancoli is very chill - perfect for taking it all in. The 19,000 m² site demands some stamina, but the distances between the buildings make the walk interesting. The tram from Isola is the best way to get there. I recommend it."
"The atmosphere is unique - it feels like stepping into an art laboratory. The Cinema, which hosts philosophy events, is a bonus you wouldn’t expect. We enjoyed the view over the Park from the bar. One small downside: we had trouble orienting ourselves at first, and the map is a bit confusing. But Rem Koolhaas’ architecture is well worth the trip. The €19 ticket properly includes access to the tower. Great memories."
"With my kids, it was a real discovery. The Torre fascinated them - the mirrors made them laugh. It was a good call to come in the morning; the queue was short. The transformed 1866 distillery building is a lesson in history and art. We took our time in the Park. Taking bus 57 is simple. The staff is professional. An unforgettable family experience."
"The old distillery, redeveloped in 2015, is a masterpiece. The Podium’s futuristic design cuts sharply against the bricks - it’s beautiful. We loved the view from the Torre, especially late in the day with the reflections. The bar in the park is an excellent place to rest. The site is immense - it took us three hours to see everything. The €19 ticket is a good investment. Contemporary art is accessible here."
"A very sophisticated place, almost an island within Milan. Koolhaas’ architecture is disorienting at first, but then it clicks. The Torre is the standout element - the view is incredible. We stopped at Atelier Brancoli, which has a solid menu. The site is well served by tram 9 from Isola. There’s some walking between the buildings, but it’s worth it. The atmosphere is calm in the morning. - author: Giulia F., city: Milan"
"We were blown away by the transformation of the factory. The Marble Elevator, in pink, is a brilliant detail before the climb. The Torre offers unique angles of the city. We appreciated the clarity of the glass Podium. The €19 ticket is reasonable given the size of the site (19,000 m²). Bring comfortable shoes. The guides’ reception is excellent. A must-visit."
"Beautiful architecture - we really enjoyed the Torre and its mirrors. The Park offers a breath of fresh air between visits. We found the Cinema a bit empty, but the atmosphere there is distinct. The site is large, and there’s a lot of walking - comfortable shoes are genuinely good advice. Access by bus 57 is simple. The art may feel abstract to some, but the architecture remains stunning. I recommend it."
"An impressive site - Koolhaas’ architecture is truly successful. The Torre and the Podium contrast well with the old distillery. We took our time in the Park to enjoy the calm. The bar inside is a nice spot. The €19 price is a bit steep, but the experience is unique. Access by tram from Isola is convenient. A place that strays from the beaten path in Milan - very original and memorable. - author: Elena R., city: Naples"

Distillery Foundation
Located south of Milan, the Prada Foundation is co-directed by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli. Inaugurated in 2015, this former gin distillery houses a contemporary art laboratory spanning 19,000 m². The OMA agency installed iconic structures on site. Designed by Rem Koolhaas, the iconic architecture includes a stainless steel sphere. The historic site is located at Largo Isarco.
History of the Prada Foundation Milan
The foundation's current site occupies the land of a former gin distillery, founded in 1866 by Miuccia Prada's grandfather. After ceasing operations, the industrial building was bought back by the Prada family. The transformation into a cultural center began well before the official opening of the new headquarters. This rehabilitation project, completed in 2015, preserves the site's industrial history while breathing new artistic life into it.
The OMA agency, led by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, won the competition to redesign this industrial complex. The project aimed to create a space where architecture and contemporary art could freely dialogue. The inauguration took place on May 9, 2015, marking a break with traditional museums. The metal silos and steel structures have become symbols of radical contemporary architecture in Milan.
The foundation also has a second site in Venice, Ca’ Corner della Regina, an 18th-century palace opened in 2011. This Venetian location complements the Milanese offering with a more classical approach, while the Largo Isarco site favors architectural and spatial experimentation. This geographical duality allows the foundation to explore dialogues between modern art and historical heritage contexts, offering a diverse program to art lovers in Italy.
What to see at the Fondazione Prada
The site is structured around three main buildings: the Podium, the Cinema, and the Tower. The Podium, an exhibition pavilion of steel and glass, contrasts radically with the red bricks of the old distillery. It hosts the season's major temporary exhibitions. This floating structure, designed to be modular, allows for monumental-scale works and varying spatial configurations according to the needs of invited artists.
The Tower, 60 meters high, is covered in mirrors that reflect the sky and the industrial environment. This 9-level tower offers a unique panoramic view of Milan. Access is via a pink marble elevator, designed as a sensory experience even before entering the rooms. Rem Koolhaas designed this spiral staircase to create a progressive immersion into contemporary art.
The Cinema serves as a multimedia auditorium for screenings, philosophy congresses, and architectural events. The outdoor park, with its interactive installations and mirrors, has become a must-see spot for photographers. The site's 'instagrammable' aspect encourages active visual exploration. Francesco Vezzoli and other artists have presented ephemeral works here, reinforcing the site's status as a living and experimental creative space, continuously open to the public.
Visiting the Prada Foundation: Practical Info
The foundation is located in an industrial zone south of Milan, far from the historic center. It is open every day from 10 am to 7 pm, except Tuesdays. It is highly recommended to book tickets in advance, as weekend slots fill up quickly. Ca’ Corner della Regina in Venice also offers tours, but the Milan site remains the beating heart of the foundation, inaugurated in 2015 by Miuccia Prada.
To get there from the center, take the M3 metro to Isola, then tram 9 or bus 57. Parking is available on-site, unlike in the city center. Allow about 2 to 3 hours to visit all the buildings and the park. Largo Isarco is the exact landmark. Wear comfortable shoes to explore the 19,000 m² of exhibition spaces and interior gardens.
Photography is generally allowed and encouraged for architectural installations. Guided tours may be available; check during booking. The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility, with elevators and ramps adapted for universal accessibility. OMA integrated these standards from the design phase. Spaces like the Podium and the Cinema are fully accessible, ensuring an inclusive experience for all visitors.

Tips for visiting the Prada Foundation
Insider tips
Aim for the 10am opening
Arrive at opening time to enjoy the morning light on the glass and steel structures. You'll avoid the crowds and have smoother access to main spaces like the Podium and the Torre. This strategy ensures a calmer experience.
Chase reflections in the Torre
Climb the tower to capture mirror games and panoramic views of Milan. The changing light creates unique visual effects, especially at the end of the day when the sky colors above Largo Isarco.
Break at the Prada Bar
Grab a coffee at the bar located in the park to observe the architecture from the outside. It's the ideal moment to rest your legs and appreciate the perspectives offered by Rem Koolhaas's site. The atmosphere is calm and inspiring, far from the urban hustle.
Transport from Isola
Take tram 9 or bus 57 from Isola station (M3 metro) for a direct and economical ride. This option avoids parking difficulties in this industrial area and guarantees an easy arrival.
Combined or separate ticket
Check if your ticket covers all spaces (Podium, Torre, Cinema) or only part of them. Full access allows you to discover the entirety of Rem Koolhaas's architectural vision in each distinct building.
Comfortable shoes
The site is vast (19,000 m²) and spread out, so plan for walking shoes between buildings. The distances between the Podium, the Torre, and the Cinema require good mobility to explore comfortably.
Avoid Tuesdays
The venue is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your visit for another day of the week. Weekend slots sell out quickly, so advance booking is highly recommended.
Look up to the sky
The architecture is designed to be viewed from different angles; look up to appreciate the roofs and structures. This perspective reveals the spatial complexity of Rem Koolhaas's project and its geometric forms.

Little-known anecdotes
From distillery to art laboratory
The Milan building, located at Largo Isarco, is a former distillery renovated in 2015 by the OMA agency. This 19,000 m² site has become a contemporary art center where architecture and space are at the heart of the experience.
Venetian Expansion
The foundation has a second site in Venice, Ca’ Corner della Regina, a 18th-century palace opened in 2011. Unlike the Milan site, this historic space offers a more classical approach to contemporary art.
Experimental Cinema
The foundation's cinema doesn't just screen films; it serves as a venue for philosophy congresses and architectural events. It's a versatile space that reflects the overall cultural mission of Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli.
Colossal Surface
With a total area of 19,000 m², the Prada Foundation is one of Europe's largest contemporary art spaces. This scale allows it to host several major exhibitions and monumental installations simultaneously at this site inaugurated in 2015.
The boldness of the glass greenhouses
The architecture of the Milan headquarters, designed by Rem Koolhaas and his agency OMA, draws direct inspiration from the greenhouses of the 1862 Universal Exhibition in London. These glass and steel structures, covering a total area of 19,000 m2, were reinvented to create fluid and luminous exhibition spaces. This radical architectural choice transforms a former distillery into a visual laboratory where natural light plays a central role in staging contemporary artworks, defying the conventions of traditional closed and dark museums.
The 24-hour museum
In 2012, the Prada Foundation pushed the boundaries of museum temporality with the 24h Museum project in Paris. Designed by artist Francesco Vezzoli, this temporary event was open for only one day, from 10am to 10am the next day, before being demolished. This one-off initiative, distinct from the permanent exhibitions in Milan or Venice, illustrated the foundation's ability to experiment with ephemeral and interactive formats, engaging the public in an intense and unique cultural experience that is never repeated in the same way.
